John Dorney |
THE NEW BOY
The Caretaker
resumes on 9 September at the Lawrence Batley
Theatre, Huddersfield.
We would like to warmly welcome John Dorney to the company, to
take over the part of Mick. John played Felix Humble in our
2008/9 tour of
Humble
Boy
and it is excellent to have him on board in a very
different role.
John's theatre credits include; Peter Pan and Flight
(National Theatre); Feelgood (English Speaking Theatres of
Vienna & Frankfurt); Something Beginning with… (Orange Tree);
Beauty and the Beast (Creation Theatre Company); Better
Watch Out (Hampstead); Volpone (Wilton’s Music Hall);
The Revengers Tragedy (Southwark Playhouse); Honolulu and
Morpheus Descending (Pleasance Courtyard); Jack and the
Beanstalk and Aladdin (Roses, Tewkesbury) and An
Evening with Gary Lineker (Wimbledon Studio).

2011 TOURING PLANS
We are delighted to announce our touring plans for the first half of
2011. A season of modern takes on European Classic plays begins with
Patrick Marber's After Miss Julie.
This sexy, stylish version of Strindberg’s landmark drama will open
at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield on 2 February before
touring the UK and Ireland for 12 weeks.
After Miss Julie
is set in July 1945. In a country house near London, celebrations
for the Labour Party’s landslide election victory are in full swing.
The lady of the house, Miss Julie, descends into the servants’
kitchen to seek out John, her father’s chauffeur. As the night draws
in and flirtation turns to
passion,
the two lovers embark on a
consuming and deadly dance of
desire. Sex, class and ambition
battle for centre stage as Patrick Marber relocates Strindberg’s
brutal, sensual love story to post-war England.
In March, our season continues with a new version of
Henrik Ibsen's
Ghosts
by award-winning Irish playwright Frank McGuinness.
For the very first time, we will have two productions on tour
simultaneously. We anticipate that Ghosts
will run for a minimum of 15 weeks, until the end of June.
Ghosts begins as
Helene Alving prepares for the opening of an orphanage, built
in memory of her late husband. Her beloved artist son, Oswald, has
returned from Paris to honour the occasion, but his long-awaited
homecoming rapidly descends into tragedy as his presence triggers
the exposure of a dark story of hypocrisy and betrayed love.
Ibsen’s study of hidden passions and family secrets remains as
dramatically alive as ever in this vital new version.
Creative teams for
both productions will be announced shortly and casting will begin,
initially for After Miss Julie,
in October.

Nicholas Gasson as Davies, Nicholas Gadd as Mick |
A PINTER PAUSE
After 13 very successful weeks on tour,
The Caretaker will
take a break for the summer before it re-opens in September. We will
all be sad to lose Nicholas Gadd, who is hanging up his leather
jacket to pursue opportunities in London. His performance as Mick
was outstanding - a perceptive, gutsy interpretation, full of
presence and attention to detail. Offstage, his
positive attitude,
good humour
and
composure were much appreciated. We wish him
all the best for the future.
A tour schedule for the Autumn can be found on our
CURRENTLY page.

FAREWELL MY LOVELY
Our 2010 UK and Ireland tour of
The Beauty Queen of Leenane
finished at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield on 27 March.
As with the 2009 tour of the play, we would like thank everyone involved
for a job very well done. The production was a great success,
opening at the Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork in February, then
touring Ireland for a further four weeks before heading back to the
UK. Our outstanding cast - Connie, Paddy, Brendan and Alan -
maintained the high standards set by the 2009 production,
consistently producing work of the very highest quality.
As always, thanks are due to our diligent and
talented design team,
Kerry, Joe and Katja,
who continued to keep the show looking at its very best. Not
forgetting Ben and Kris, our stage managers, who
gained something of a reputation for embracing Irish
hospitality with a similar vigour to their duties
behind the scenes!
