"An Englishman, an Irishman and an American are locked in a cell - but this is no joke.

The three men are hostages in Beirut and the London Classic Theatre Company production is based on the real-life experiences of Brian Keenan, Terry Anderson and John McCarthy. Within the crumbling, concrete dinginess of the prison, the play portrays the captives’ frustration, boredom and, above all, fear.

Actors Nicholas Gasson, Christopher Patrick Nolan and Patrick Poletti work brilliantly together to create the complex and changing relationships between the characters. The tension between the three hostages is, at times, almost unbearable. Moods swing from anger to apathy, from bitter resentment to acknowledged defeat. And yet, running through this compelling production is a stream of humour that, even in the darkest moments, brings laughter to the audience and new strength to the three men stuck in this awful predicament.

And what do three men talk about when locked up together for months on end? Well, there’s the obvious - life and death, religion, their homes and families. And then there’s films and football and underwear and tennis.

As the hostages talk and bicker and laugh and cry, the strength of the human character in this most awful of situations is revealed. Brilliantly powerful stuff."
